<image:caption>Waddell Creek, from left to right: (1) Mile 2.15+ looking upstream. In 2023 this habitat was a narrow and very shallow run and riffle upstream past the fallen multi-trunked alders spanning the channel. In 2024 the channel was widened and occupied by a pool averaging 1.4 ft deep and reaching 3.0 ft deep at the left bank of the fallen alders. (2) Mile 2.7. Just upstream in the wide flat channel above the jam, the channel shows substantial aggradation, apparently due to the large jam intercepting sediment carried in the January and February high flows. Willows and alders (to 10+ ft high) have colonized the sunny channel. (3) West Fork, mile 3.1+, looking downstream. Former long , deep, fish sampling pool mostly filled in 2022. Even shallower in 2024. Partial logjam in downstream portion from 2023 still intact.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Gazos Creek, from left to right: (1) Mile 2.1 on 25 June 2024, looking downstream to head of Habitat 2. A transported 23 ft x 3 ft dia. redwood log anchored on left bank has produced pool scour and escape habitat. (2) Mile 3.0 from road on 2 May 2024. North slope debris flow that crossed the road in 2023 is substantially revegetated. (3) Mile 3.3 on 2 May 2024. The tightly packed jam may not be passable except at very high flows.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From left to right: (1) Tan oak bark burns… Despite being rich in tannic acids, tan oak logs burn well. (2) Redwood bark burns… sometimes… Fire has burned upward along bark ridges. (3) Redwood bark resists burning if bark is thick and holds water… Fire burned out heartwood within a shell of bark that didn’t burn. The hollow interior created an oven-like environment that intensified heat enough to overcome the fire resistance of the heartwood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Plausible Theory for the Creation of Hollow Trees, from left to right: (1) Step 1. An old-growth redwood burning from the inside, bottom upwards. (2) Step 2. Tannin levels are highest in the outside edge of the heartwood, forming a fire-resistant ring. Fire burns upwards and not outward — the end result is a hollow tree like this. (3) Step 3. Hollow trees are unstable and often collapse leaving a shell tree like this one.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From left to right: (1) Thorough coverage of the burn within the fire perimeter left few refuge areas where wildlife could survive (5-21-22). (2) On old-growth trees most large branches were burned away, removing the suitable nest sites used by marbled murrelets (6-18-22). (3) Hillside near Sempervirens Campground (6-2-22). (4) Loss of tree canopies allowed sunlight to reach the forest floor and sun-loving plants to replace the normal redwood flora (9-25-23).</image:caption>

The tightly packed jam may not be passable except at very high flows.

<image:caption>Dale Holderman, a Big Creek Lumber forester, discovered an albino redwood in Soquel that produced pollen after the 1976 drought.
